Chapter 15

Brian

Eric gave me a ride to the Black Java later that evening. “You’re sure she said it was okay?”

I drummed my fingers against my knee, anxious and excited. “Yeah, man. After Rachel’s labor scare, we’ve been on good terms. She shared about her pride; I shared about Hannah. We had a moment.”

Eric grew thoughtful as he pulled into the coffee shop’s parking lot. “If she’s okay with you now, I guess I was wrong before.”

I clapped him on the shoulder. “Don’t feel too bad. It happens to the best of us.”

“This still doesn’t mean she’s going to the prom with you.”

“Forget the prom! She’s not getting angry whenever I open my mouth anymore. Nothing you can say can bring me down. I’m winning.”

Eric snorted as he parked the car. “Famous last words.”

I couldn’t help it. Today had gone better than I’d expected. She was nicer and more conscious of her hostility. I wondered whether she’d go back to hating me if I tried hanging out with her outside of school, but I shook my head at the thought. Too much, too soon. I need to be careful.

The Black Java was packed. Eric and I parted ways at the door so that he could set up his drums on the stage. I smiled at a few people I knew and looked for a place to sit. I spotted a familiar little girl sitting at a table near the cash register and made a beeline towards her.

Amy’s chocolate covered face lit up in surprise. “Brian!”

“Amy!”

She blushed as if she’d suddenly remembered she was shy around people she didn’t know too well. “Hi. What’re you doing here?”

I slipped into the seat across from her. “I’m here to see Iris and Eric play. What’re you doing here?”

“Iris promised me ice cream if I went to school today,” she chirped.

“How come your siblings don’t get ice cream, too?”

She spoke between licks, gripping her ice cream cone between both hands. “I had the worst nightmare last night. I didn’t want to go to school today. Iris promised me ice cream if I did.”

“I see. Do you need some more napkins?”

She adopted a sheepish smile. “I think so.”

“Be right back,” I said, standing.

I caught myself preparing what I was going to say while I stood in line, and I shook my head. What’s gotten into me? I smiled when it was finally my turn. I couldn’t help but notice that black and gold looked great on Iris. She rolled her eyes, but I could see it took effort. It was getting easier to read her.

“Don’t smile at me like that. What do you want to order?”

I pretended to be insulted. “Are you always this rude to your customers?”

Iris sighed dramatically, blowing a curl out of her face. “What would you like to order, sir?”

“I’d like a medium Oreo shake with a cherry, extra chocolate, and whipped cream, please.” I watched her punch a few buttons into the cash register and reach over to get me a large foam cup.
